Conceptual photography is a type of photography that is more about the idea itself than the actual work that develops from the idea. This interests me quite a lot as I don't really think of the concept being as important or more important in this case than the work.
Ed ruscha
A conceptual artist that I have recently found out about is Ed Ruscha whose work I have seen in the Barbican Gallery.
I quite liked his work from the Barbican as it was kind of like a typology of car parks in Black and White and were taken from a helicopter. He has also done quite a lot of work on panoramas. I find it interesting how all of the images from car parks all look so good even though they aren't centralised and some of the car parks are not completely in the picture. I think I am drawn towards this as I like all of the geometric lines and how it is in black and white. |
STEPHEN GILL
Stephen Gill has an exhibition of all of his work from 13 years. His work has differed dramatically since he started to now as he used to photograph day to day objects that are quite controlled and normal however he now photographs in quite an intense, abstract way where the subject is embedded into the images as the images are only part processed and he also uses energy drinks to process the images. I don't really like the work by Stephen Gill I think it is quite weird and I'm not quite sure about it. The one I am questioning the most is the talking to ants series, I find this one the weirdest out of all of the different series that he has produced and I don't really like them.
The images to the left are quite weird, it is not something that I would normally stop and look at it in an exhibition. I do not think they are badly executed however it does kind of inspire me and makes me feel like I should like abstract art even though for some weird reason I don't like it. The first image from the best before end series seems to mostly be green and about plants, however the image from the talking to ants series is seems to have nature in the background with woodlice on the lens and a broken piece of ruler on top. |
sophie calle
Sophie has a collection of photos in a range from images taken when stalking people. She once followed someone on their travels to Venice and photographed them along the way. I find her photos quite interesting however I would not be able to just follow someone and take pictures of them- it is quite weird and very against my morals.
