Anna atkins- cyanotypes
Anna Atkins was born in 1799 and died in 1871, before she became a photographer she used to be a botanist which is why she later decided to use flowers as her muse. Later on when she became a photographer she used cyanotypes to document all of the different types of British and foreign flowering plants and ferns.
A few of her photographs are below, the one on the left is labelled at the bottom as "Cystoseira granulata" which is an image from her British Algae book. The middle image seems to be of some poppies, this is from the first book she published. The last image on the right looks like it is of a dandelion. All of the photographs below are very effective and show quite a lot of detail, especially the dandelion as there are so many intricate lines.

I quite like cyanotypes- especially the ones by Anna Atkins, this is due to thee subject she has done them on (Flowers and Ferns). I like how they are extremely clear and show every intricate detail.
Laszlo maholy nagy- photograms
Laszlo was born in 1895 and died in 1946, Nagy used two methods to produce the images, the first was placing object directly onto photographic paper and exposing it to natural or artificial light- soon the contours and shadows of the object let light surfaces on a dark background. The second method was to take place in a dark room where the evolution of the form is not visible and it could only be observed after developing.
All of the photograms below taken by Laszlo are all completely different, the first one seems to be about stationary as you can see loads of paper clips, the second image is of a car park with loads of cars parked in the middle and tyre tracks around them and the last image is of a hand that has a weird pattern on it.

The image in the middle is very interesting, it seems to be of a car park from a birds eye view. It also looks like it had been snowing as you can see all the tyre marks very clearly, it also looks like it is very old as the cars in the images look like they are from the 1940s. I think the image was either taken in the 1940s or it is a picture of a painting. The part of the image that strikes me the most is the tyre tracks, this may be because it is the darkest part of the image. In the artwork there are cars parking in the car park. I think other people will also like this piece of art as it is very interesting. I think the bit of art is worth remembering because of the different types of grey and how something in black and white can stand out so much.
CHRISTIAN SCHAD
I personally don't really like the artwork by Christian Schad, the image on the left seems to be of dandelion seeds which I suppose looks quite good however I don't like the image on the right as I don't know what it is of and it doesn't look very nice to me. I think it looks like there is a butterfly and some type of flower but I prefer photographs that aren't as busy and don't have as much in the image as I find images that are more simple nicer.
FREDERICK SOMMER
Frederick was born in 1905 and died in 1999, he tarted to experiment with photography in the 1930s, his photographs range from disorientating landscapes to surreal arrangements of found objects. The images below are completely different but are both taken by Frederick, the one of the left looks like an innocent little girl whilst the one of the right is of a gun which is powerful and dangerous.
I find Frederick Sommer's images interesting as they all seem to be completely different even though they are all in black and white. The one I find most interesting is the image of the girl as I seem to be wondering what colour her eyes are as they are very open and wide and look like they would be extremely bright. I also like the gun and how vintage the image looks with all of the different grey tones.
pierre cordier
The images to the right are of photographs that Pierre Cordier has taken during his life span. I personally find Pierre Cordier's images quite interesting, I don't think these are my favourite images from all of the photographers that I have looked at, however the best image from the right in my opinion is the one that has a bright blue background and trees through an arch.

Pierre Cordier was born on 28th January 1933 in Brussels. In 1956 whilst writing a letter with nail polish on a piece of photographic paper, he discovered chemigrams. Chemigrams use varnish/oil/wax with photosensitive emulsion, developer and fixer to make pictures without the use of a camera. This opened up a whole new genre of photography without the need of a camera.

JAROSLAW KLUPS-SELFORMS
|
Jaroslaw Klups is a polish photographer, his series of photographs to the left are of selforms.
I think these images are really weird and out of the ordinary, personally I don't like them as I think the images are taken so close to their face. The people also look like they are sad and that they are all going through a rough time, this seems to be empahsised due to the photographs all being in black and white as black and white images in my opinion make people look sadder than they already are. |
CHRISTOPHER NUNN-EdITH
|
Christopher Nunn is a photographer from Yorkshire, the photographs to the right are from the "Edith" project. This project is when Christopher Nunn photographed a old dead ladies vacant flat- the way it was left.
The photograph I like the most is the one of the wilting roses, this is because I like how it is like a metaphor of what has happened to the lady that used to live there. I think my least favourite image is the dentures on the table as I think it looks quite freaky and quite depressing. To conclude, I do not really like the images from this project by Christopher Nunn-Edith as I find them quite depressing and morally wrong taking images of someone's house who are dead. |
THE BOYLE FAMILY
The images above are from the Boyle family Tate shots, I really don't like the images above as it gives me the shivers looking at all of the tiny microscopic bugs that are in the world. The image to the left are of the Boyle families hair roots, this is quite an interesting prospect however I still find it extremely weird and would not want to have an image like that in my house. I suppose it is quite amazing how everything has been taken on such a small scale.
pinhole photographers
justin quinnell
The images above are taken by Justin Quinnell, I quite like these images as they are all completely different to each other. The middle image is difficult to decipher and I am not sure what it is of however I think I like that one the best because of the mystery and how intriguing it is as it looks like it is a symmetrical pattern. The first image seems to be an inverted image of a tower building of some description and the last image seems to be simply of a man standing next to a bin in a field, the sun must be quite low in the sky as the shadows seem to be extremely long.
steve irvine
I really like the images by Steve Irwin above, they all seem to be quite dark and mysterious. The photo on the left seems to be looking out two windows which is quite spooky as you can not see what is outside the window, my favourite out of the three is the middle image which seems to be of a person standing in a pipe. I like this image the most because I like the endless possibilities that the person could be looking at out of the end of the pipe. The last image is also quite interesting as it looks like it was taken in the sewers and there is a pigeon sitting in the end of the pipe.
Nancy breslin
Nancy Breslins images above are of meals through a pinhole camera I find these images very intriguing as the people are blurry due to them moving and getting on with their daily lives whilst the photos are being taken. I am not really feeling a connection with these images as I think they are too blurry.
In my opinion, I think I like the images that Nancy Breslin took the least then Justin Quinnells and my favourite photographer out of the three- Steve Irvine.
