school projects
This page is for all of the projects that are very school based as the images I have taken have either been from inside the school or the task has been set for homework.
The first thing I did for this course was take 30 photos on contrast, this was quite difficult as I didn't really know what to photograph and how any of my pictures could be contrasted, however I then realised that every image is contrasted in its own way but just at different strengths.
The next thing we studied was cyanotypes, chemigrams and photograms. We also had to research about all the different photographers that have worked in this area, this ranges from Anna Atkins with cyanotypes to Pierre Cordier with Photograms. I found it really interesting researching all the different photographers and how they came up with all of these techniques- sometimes accidentally.
We also studied the Formal elements, we looked at all of the different individual elements to evaluate a different picture after we had all written notes about the different photographs in class.
The next thing we did was the Viewpoint Photos, this was when we took photographs of different things around the school from different viewpoints. After this, we then had to choose 5 of the images to edit. These images were all edited on photoshop, I found this quite difficult to begin with as I have not really used photoshop before, however I soon got the hang of it and I was finding it quite easy once I had edited a few.
We then studied Albert Renger-Patzsch and his book "The World is Beautiful", we then used that for inspiration and made our own "The World is Beautiful". I quite enjoyed this project as it made you think of things that aren't that beautiful and try to frame them to make them look beautiful which was quite difficult at first but then you realise that it can be quite simple if you do it well.
The next project we did was "Typologies", I thought this was quite a difficult project as it had to be quite a lot of similar objects that are all slightly different. We then did some work on Abstract Forms, this involved researching some photographers that focused on abstract items and to create my own.
The next thing we did was look up Keld Helmer-Petersen whose images we looked at were just black and white with hardly or no grey in the images at all. We also studied "Focus" and how some images can also look good even when they are not in focus. Recently we went on a trip to the Barbican Gallery and I have documented it all on my website, I also researched the Barbican before I went there so I knew what part of the exhibition I should spend more time looking at as we didn't have much time.
The next thing I studied was Berenice Abbott and her photos that she took in New York, luckily I was fortunate enough that earlier this year I got to go there and edited my images to look very similar to hers. The last thing we have studied in this unit is Conceptual photography, this is a type of photography that is more about the idea than the result itself.
